Europe takes major step forward to protect women’s rights

The Council of Europe's Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, which was agreed on in Istanbul in 2011, is praised by the Secretary General Jagland as "a standard reference in and outside Europe as the most comprehensive catalogue of measures in this field." The convention, he stressed, pulls together judicial reform, victim support and monitoring to eradicate violence against women.
