UN Women calls for international cooperation in fighting extremist violence in Nigeria

The UN Women's executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has published a statement regarding the one-year anniversary of the kidnapping of 276 young girls in Chibok, Nigeria. The on-oging duration of the kidnapping by Boko Haram is a stark reminder of the lack in adequate responses to extremist violence, says Mlambo-Ngcuka. She urges the international community to find a solution, but also to build coordinated measures against violence of this kind and towards supporting local communities and families. Apart from military actions, these include "good governance, sustainable development, conflict prevention and peacebuilding strategies that empower women as decision-makers and partners, and protect the rights of women and girls to education, justice and security".
