Nigeria: female genital mutilation (FGM) banned by law

Archive

In May, a ban on female genital mutilation (FGM) was signed into law by outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan. Acticvists hope, that this will have an impact on those African states, were the practice is still legal.

However, activists say, the struggle against female genital mutilation is far from over, as not only laws, but also attitudes need to change.

About one quarter of Nigerian girls and women have undergone the procedure, with about 125 million girls and women affected worldwide.
